The University of Toronto is an institution of public learning that was founded in 1827. Around 80 percent study at the undergraduate level. The school has three campuses: Scarborough (in and around Toronto), Mississauga (in St. George), and St. George (in and around Toronto). Nearly 95 per cent of the university’s graduate student students attend the St. George campus in downtown Toronto. More than 60 percent of its undergraduate students also study there. University of Toronto attracts thousands of students from more 160 countries and regions. China, India, and the U.S. ranked the highest for non-Canadian students in a recent survey. International students pay more tuition.
The university has academic divisions that are focused on a wide range of disciplines including applied science, engineering Jean Chen University of Toronto and management as well as public health. The university offers approximately 700 undergraduate programs as well more than 200 graduate and doctoral programs. English is the principal language of instruction. The academic calendar is different between each campus. There is student housing on each campus. Accommodations are provided for first-year students. The university boasts more than 44 libraries, which house over 19 million physical volumes. In insulin, which was discovered by researchers in early 1920s, the University of Toronto is the origin of a significant innovation. The Banting & Best Diabetes Centre was named after two of the researchers. One of these researchers went on to win a Nobel Prize in physiology, or medicine.
